Fuse cutout

When a primary fuse cutout malfunctions, it can lead to dangerous outages.

Inadequate Insulation Leakage Distance

Introduction

In Australia, a tracking fuse cut out was found using the Early Fault Detection (EFD) System. The system identified and located tracking issues in undersized fuse cutouts. This early warning enabled the mine operator to replace the faulty assets, preventing reliability and safety incidents while improving design standards across their operations. Also, it led to improved operational uptime across the operation.

EFD™ reduces unplanned outages and boosts reliability by proactively pinpointing electrical faults.

EFD™ empowers asset owners to uncover the critical top 10% of network issues, enabling them to prioritize maintenance with precision.

By targeting vulnerabilities, EFD™ not only enhances system reliability but also significantly reduces costly downtime and extends asset lifespan.

Summary

Tracking issues in the fuse cut out were found and verified using a corona camera in humid morning conditions. The investigation by IND.T revealed that the fuse cutouts were undersized for the operating voltage and environment (coastal and high pollution), which highlighted a critical design flaw.

Proactively identifying this issue prevented potential failures and safety risks. In addition, it allowed the mine operator to streamline their maintenance, optimize turnaround activities and improve network uptime. Looking forward, the mine operator can enhance their design standards to mitigate future risks.

Testimonials

Eliminating customer outages, driving affordability because we can efficiently group our work instead of heading out to fix things whenever they fail, and dearest to my heart, risk management – not just put in better protection to respond to faults and limit consequences, but actually manage the risk of faults happening – all I can say is this tech is magic.

The results have been very promising, and it’s worked the way it’s designed to. We’ll let the trial play out and then we’ll look at the deployment across our network.
